On the 6th of June, 1944, known as D-Day, around 156,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France. This historic invasion marked the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe. Among these brave soldiers were the Men 70, a special unit of elderly gentlemen who had valiantly fought in World War I and were determined to return to the battlefield once more.

The Men 70 were a group of veterans who, despite their age, possessed an unwavering spirit and a burning desire to contribute to the war effort. Their determination, grit, and wisdom made them an invaluable addition to the Allied forces. Although they may not have possessed the physical prowess of their younger counterparts, their experience and bravery more than made up for it.

As the day of the Normandy landings approached, the Men 70 eagerly prepared themselves for battle. They engaged in intense training sessions to sharpen their skills and ensure they were ready for the challenges ahead. Each man knew the risks involved, but their sense of duty and love for their country pushed them forward.

When the day finally arrived, the Men 70 found themselves at the center of an intense battle. The beaches were fraught with chaos and danger as bullets whizzed past their heads and explosions shook the ground beneath them. But through it all, these brave veterans pressed on, their determination unyielding.

Their advanced age did not hinder their ability to make a difference on the battlefield. The Men 70 used their wisdom and experience to outsmart the enemy, finding alternative strategies to achieve victory. Their presence on the frontlines inspired the younger soldiers, who saw firsthand the unwavering commitment of these remarkable individuals.

As the days turned into weeks, the Men 70 continued to prove their worth. Landmark after landmark fell under their command as they fought valiantly to liberate Normandy from German occupation. Each success was hard-fought and came at a price, as many of these veteran soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice.

Despite the setbacks and tragedies, the Men 70 refused to back down. They refused to let their age define their capabilities, instead choosing to define themselves through their actions. With every battle won, their determination grew stronger, and their courage became an inspiration to all who fought alongside them.

After 35 days of intense fighting, the Men 70 witnessed the fruits of their labor. Normandy was finally free from the clutches of the enemy, and their efforts were not in vain. The return to the beaches of Normandy brought a sense of closure for these veterans who had fought so bravely all those years ago.

The legacy of the Men 70 lives on, serving as a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. Their commitment to their country and their fellow soldiers is a testament to the strength and courage that can be found within all of us. Their story is not just one of military success, but also one of personal triumph and the indomitable will to persevere.

Today, as we remember D-Day and the sacrifices made, let us not forget the extraordinary contributions of the Men 70. Their return to the beaches of Normandy symbolizes the unbreakable bond between generations and the unwavering spirit of those who serve. Their legacy will forever be etched within the annals of history, serving as a beacon of inspiration for future generations.

A World War II veteran in the twilight of his life stands once again on the soil where he fought the Nazis when he was young man. He remembers those long-gone days of terror and valor and thinks of friends who died before his eyes. In a voice tinged with age and emotion, he talks about what he saw and heard and felt. Why would he want to revisit the places where he saw hell erupt around him? For many veterans, the experience brings a sense of closure to memories that often have been locked away like an old uniform. They find healing in places where once they witnessed the worst—and the best—that humanity has to offer.

Since 2004, The Greatest Generations Foundation has offered the opportunity for veterans to return to their battlefields at no cost to them. These voyages back to the battlefields are often emotional, providing aging veterans a long-overdue method of dealing with their war experiences, a chance to re-kindle pride in their service and sacrifices, and a venue to educate others.

In “Return to D-Day,” you can share in the stories of 35 such men, accompanied by John Riedy’s striking photographs that capture the raw emotions of their return to a pivotal battlefield of World War II in Europe.

These are tough men who did things in war that often seem impossible today, things that needed doing if the world was to shake free of Nazi tyranny. Standing on Normandy Beaches, once among the bloodiest battlegrounds of military history, they humbly reflect on those events with acute and incisive hindsight.

These men changed the course of history.
