Do you ever feel like you're running behind in life? That everyone around you seems to have it all figured out while you are still trying to find your way? If so, you may be a late bloomer. Being a late bloomer can be both frustrating and liberating. It means going against societal expectations and finding your own path at your own pace. In this article, we will explore the joy and weirdness of being a late bloomer and why it's not something to be ashamed of.

Discovering Your Own Path

One of the greatest joys of being a late bloomer is the freedom to discover your own path. While others may feel pressured to follow a specific timeline for success, late bloomers have the opportunity to explore different options and passions. They can take the time to figure out what truly brings them joy and fulfillment, without the constraints of societal expectations.

Society often puts a lot of pressure on individuals to achieve certain milestones by a certain age. We are expected to graduate college, find a stable job, get married, and start a family all within a specific timeframe. However, late bloomers challenge these expectations and pave their own way.

Late bloomers may take longer to find their passion or figure out their career path, but once they do, they often excel and find true fulfillment. They have the advantage of learning from the experiences and mistakes of others, and they are more likely to make choices that align with their true values and aspirations.

It's important for late bloomers to embrace their own journey and not compare themselves to others. Each person's path is unique, and there is no right or wrong way to navigate through life. Embracing the weirdness of being a late bloomer can lead to unexpected joy and self-discovery.

The Power of Reinvention

Late bloomers have the unique ability to reinvent themselves. When you don't discover your true passion or purpose until later in life, it gives you the opportunity to start fresh and pursue a new direction. This can be incredibly liberating and empowering.

Reinvention allows late bloomers to shed their previous identities and embrace a new path that aligns with their true selves. It may require taking risks and stepping outside of your comfort zone, but the rewards can be extraordinary. Whether it's switching careers, pursuing a creative endeavor, or making a lifestyle change, late bloomers have the freedom to redefine themselves and explore new possibilities.

The process of reinvention can also be weirdly exciting. It's a chance to break free from societal labels and expectations and create a life that is uniquely yours. It requires embracing uncertainty and being open to the unknown. This ability to embrace the weirdness of reinvention is what sets late bloomers apart and allows them to truly thrive.

Late bloomers may face criticism or skepticism from those who don't understand their journey. However, the joy of reinvention and the satisfaction of discovering your true calling make it all worth it. Late bloomers have the opportunity to create a life that is authentic and fulfilling, and that is something to celebrate.

Embracing the Unexpected

Late bloomers often stumble upon their passion or purpose in the most unexpected ways. They may have tried multiple career paths, explored various interests, or faced setbacks along the way. But in the midst of the chaos and uncertainty, they find something that brings them true joy and fulfillment.

The joy of being a late bloomer lies in the unexpected discoveries and the surprises that come along the way. It's the joy of stumbling upon something that truly aligns with your values and passions, even if it takes longer than expected. Late bloomers have the advantage of a unique perspective and a deeper appreciation for the journey itself.

Embracing the weirdness of being a late bloomer means embracing the twists and turns that life throws at you. It means being open to new opportunities and being willing to take risks. Late bloomers often have a resilience and determination that comes from years of navigating their own path.

So, if you find yourself feeling like you're running behind or that you're not where you thought you would be in life, take a step back and embrace the weirdness of being a late bloomer. Trust that your journey is unfolding exactly as it should and that there is joy to be found in the unexpected. Embrace your own path, reinvent yourself if necessary, and be open to the wonderful surprises that await you.

An honest, witty, and insightful memoir about what happens when your coming-of-age comes later than expected

Thanks for Waiting is the loving, wise, cuttingly funny older sister we all need in book form.”—Tara Schuster, author of Buy Yourself the F*cking Lilies

Doree Shafrir spent much of her twenties and thirties feeling out of sync with her peers. She was an intern at twenty-nine and met her husband on Tinder in her late thirties, after many of her friends had already gotten married, started families, and entered couples’ counseling. After a long fertility struggle, she became a first-time mom at forty-one, joining Mommy & Me classes where most of the other moms were at least ten years younger. And while she was one of Gawker’s early hires and one of the first editors at BuzzFeed, she didn’t find professional fulfillment until she co-launched the successful self-care podcast Forever35—at forty.

Now, in her debut memoir, Shafrir explores the enormous pressures we feel, especially as women, to hit particular milestones at certain times and how we can redefine what it means to be a late bloomer. She writes about everything from dating to infertility, to how friendships evolve as you get older, to why being pregnant at forty-one is unexpectedly freeing—all with the goal of appreciating the lives we’ve lived so far and the lives we still hope to live.

Thanks for Waiting is about how achieving the milestones you thought were so important don’t always happen on the time line you imagined. In a world of 30 Under 30 lists, this book is a welcome reminder that it’s okay to live life at your own speed.
