Abdul Hayee, better known as Sahir Ludhianvi in the world of Urdu literature, wrote some of the most soulful poetry, and several of his ghazals and nazms are ageless.
Sahir was Born in 1921 in a jagirdar family and his father had several wives. His mother left her abusive husband, and in the court, young Abdul Hayee chose to stay with his mother. His father was infuriated at his son's choice and disinherited and threatened him. His mother left no stone unturned in her only son's education and made sure that he was safe. This, however, left young Sahir disenchanted and bitter. Sahir left his hometown Ludhiana and decided to move to Lahore.
When Sahir began writing poetry, the Urdu poetry world was rich with the poetic works of Urdu poetry's stalwarts. The readers loved Iqbal, Josh, Majaz, Firaq, and Faiz, and it was not easy for a newcomer like Sahir to establish himself as a poet. However, Sahir made his poetry speak for itself. He was still a student in Lahore when his first poetry collection, TalkhiyaN was published. The book had an interesting mix of emotional, romantic, and revolutionary poetry, and its simple and colloquial language appealed to his readers. Sahir's poetry has a freshness; it is truthful and straightforward and beautifully written in musical verses, which appeals to his reader.
Calling his first poetry collection TalkhiyaN (bitterness) says a lot about the poet. The pain and anguish Sahir endured while growing up get reflected in his poetry, and his readers connect with it.
