to the Danse Macabre

The Danse Macabre, also known as the Dance of Death, is an artistic theme that gained popularity in the late Middle Ages. It depicts a variety of characters, from peasants to nobles, engaging in a dance with death itself. The purpose of these illustrations was to remind people of the inevitability of death and the equality it brings to all humanity.

The word "macabre" originated from the Latin "macabrus" which means "death." The Danse Macabre illustrations were often found in churches, cemeteries, and other places associated with mortality. They served as a powerful reminder to individuals of their own mortality and encouraged them to lead virtuous and righteous lives.

For anyone who wants to collect, admire and create unique art!

This book features intricate 16th Century woodcut prints from the artist Hans Holbein the Younger (1497–1543) for his series The Danse Macabre (The Dance of Death). The Danse Macabre is a portrayal on the universality of death that unites all levels of society.

The images start with scenes of Adam and Eve being expelled from the Garden of Eden and move onto scenes in which various victims meet Death.

Holbein's images are seen as a contemporaneous rise of Protestantism during the 16th-century Reformation where followers began to reject Roman Catholic doctrines, indulgence, and excess.

These 41 technical marvels were cut in small (65x50mm) blocks of wood by the virtuoso Hans Lützelburger and considered a monumental achievement. They are full of mischief and will inspire your creative juices.

This ebook also exists in paperback format as a coloring or design idea book. The ebook version has been created to offer the design and artistic content in electronic form for those who don't wish to use it for coloring.
