How To Raise a Kind Child in a Prejudiced World
![Jese Leos](https://bookishfables.com/author/harvey-hughes.jpg)
In a world that often seems consumed by prejudice and discrimination, raising a kind and compassionate child is more important than ever. As parents, it is our responsibility to teach our children to be accepting and empathetic towards all individuals, regardless of their differences.
Kindness is a characteristic that can be nurtured from a young age, and parents play a vital role in shaping their children's values and behavior. By instilling the importance of kindness, we can help create a generation that is more tolerant, understanding, and respectful towards others.
Lead by Example
The first step in raising a kind child is to lead by example. Children learn from watching their parents, so it is essential to demonstrate kindness in our own interactions with others. This includes treating people with respect, showing empathy, and being mindful of our words and actions.

When children witness kindness in their parents, they are more likely to emulate this behavior and incorporate it into their own lives. By being a positive role model, you can shape your child's understanding of empathy and make a lasting impact.
Teach Empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. By teaching empathy, we can help children develop a sense of compassion towards others. One way to do this is by encouraging your child to put themselves in someone else's shoes and consider how their actions may impact others.
Engaging in conversations that highlight the importance of empathy can help children recognize that everyone has their own unique experiences and challenges. Encourage your child to think about how they would feel if they were in a similar situation and discuss ways to offer support and understanding.
Emphasize Acceptance
In a prejudiced world, it is crucial to teach our children the value of acceptance. Encourage your child to embrace diversity and celebrate differences. Emphasize that every individual deserves respect and kindness, regardless of their race, religion, gender, or background.
Expose your child to various cultures, traditions, and beliefs. Visit cultural events, read books that showcase diverse characters, and engage in conversations about different perspectives. By exposing your child to a variety of experiences, you can help them develop a broader understanding of the world and foster acceptance.
Encourage Acts of Kindness
Actively encouraging acts of kindness is a powerful way to teach your child about the importance of generosity and compassion. Encourage your child to perform random acts of kindness, such as helping someone in need or sharing their toys with others.
Lead them by example and engage in volunteer work as a family. This can be through participating in community service projects or donating to charities. By actively engaging in acts of kindness, your child will learn firsthand how their actions can have a significant impact on others.
Address Prejudice and Stereotypes
Prejudice and stereotypes are unfortunately prevalent in our society. It is essential to address these issues head-on and teach our children to challenge these negative beliefs. Engage your child in discussions about fairness, equality, and the harmful effects of discrimination.
Explain to them that prejudices are often based on stereotypes and that it is crucial not to judge others based on their appearance, beliefs, or background. Encourage your child to question biases and stereotypes portrayed in media and teach them to treat every person as an individual, without preconceived notions.
Promote Positive Communication
Effective communication is key to fostering kindness and understanding in relationships. Teach your child how to express their feelings in a respectful manner and encourage active listening. By promoting open and honest communication, your child can develop the skills necessary to navigate difficult conversations and resolve conflicts peacefully.
Show your child the power of kind words and encourage them to use words that uplift and inspire others. Teach them to speak out against injustice and to stand up for what they believe in, while maintaining kindness and empathy towards others.
Raising a kind child in a prejudiced world may seem challenging, but it is a crucial responsibility we have as parents. By leading by example, teaching empathy, emphasizing acceptance, encouraging acts of kindness, addressing prejudice and stereotypes, and promoting positive communication, we can guide our children towards becoming compassionate and inclusive individuals.
Remember, change starts at home, and by instilling these values in our children, we can contribute towards creating a kinder and more tolerant society for future generations.

"Uju Asika has written a necessary book for our times."—Chika Unigwe, author of On Black Sisters' Street
You can't avoid it, because it's everywhere. In the looks Black kids get in certain spaces, the manner in which some people speak to them, the stuff that goes over their heads. Stuff that makes them cry even when they don't know why. How do you bring up your kids to be kind and happy when there is so much out there trying to break them down?
Bringing Up Race is an important book, for all families whatever their race or ethnicity. It's for everyone who wants to instil a sense of open-minded inclusivity in their kids, and those who want to discuss difference instead of shying away from tough questions. Uju Asika draws on often shocking personal stories of prejudice along with opinions of experts, influencers, and fellow parents to give prescriptive advice in this invaluable guide.
Bringing Up Race explores:
- When children start noticing ethnic differences (hint: much earlier than you think)
- What to do if your child says something racist (try not to freak out)
- How to have open, honest, age-appropriate conversations about race
- How children and parents can handle racial bullying
- How to recognize and challenge everyday racism, aka microaggressions
Bringing Up Race is a call to arms for all parents as our society works to combat white supremacy and dismantle the systemic racism that has existed for hundreds of years.
