To describe this phenomenon mathematically, scientists use Snell's Law, named after the Dutch astronomer Willebrord Snellius. Snell's Law states that the ratio of the sines of the angles of incidence and refraction is equal to the ratio of the refractive indices of the two mediums:
sin(θ1) / sin(θ2) = n2 / n1
Where θ1 is the angle of incidence, θ2 is the angle of refraction, n1 is the refractive index of the initial medium, and n2 is the refractive index of the second medium.
