Having learned about “mind conditioning techniques” from reading a book by Tim Ferris called Tools of Titans, I began exploring a means of conditioning my own mind with the intent of eventually finding a place of peace. I created my own mind conditioning technique that worked for me involving angular loops. The purpose was to keep myself from dwelling on the negative, as well as to keep things out of my head that I didn’t want in there.
Over time, I created thousands of pages of loop drawings. I drew them continuously, in part as a rebellion against the sheer state of stupidity and ignorance I had to deal with everyday. I was living with someone whose entire idea of life was completely opposite of mine, and whose views were completely unrelated to my own. We had absolutely nothing in common, and everything spoken to me seemed like completely useless information rooted in backwards and off-kilter perceptions of the world.
The power of staying in motion while doing a mindless activity, I believe, actually helped me heal the neurosis. Drawing these loops was a way for me to be in motion while stuck in a small space with no real way out. I could keep the pen moving, almost violently at times, drawing an endless web of intricate loops on any paper I could find, which at times included leftover graphs related to sports wagering from my roommate. I used any type of writing instrument that was readily available. I used markers, pens, crayons, and colored pencils to draw them.
These loops are not only visually intriguing, but they can be read for signs. In other words, when you look at them, you may see different things in them. Perhaps in the same way as you would by looking for things in clouds. You may even think of something which you completely hadn’t considered as of yet just by viewing these images. When something so completely far fetched such as intricate and repetitive angular loops drawn in different ways becomes the subject for a book, the possibilities for interpretation also become of a new and original translation. Hopefully, they will have become understandable in a way that lends towards new discovery.
The particular drawings in this book are the most visually intriguing examples of the seemingly endless multitude of loop drawings that I created during this dark stage of my life. When you look at the loops, you gain a sense of the emotions that the artist was experiencing during the creative process. You can almost sense his discontentedness coming through within each depiction. The loops became a path leading to other happier paths. By drawing them, the artist and author eventually worked his way out of a self-created and neurosis-filled vacuum of art, and into a happier world with a new lifestyle based on good things. Happiness and a sense of adventure involving other people have now become key motivators in this artist’s life and work.
You will also see a few funny pizza delivery drawings placed sporadically throughout the book. The artist’s roommate at the time delivered pizzas, so the artist portrayed him delivering pizzas in a comical way. Have fun interpreting the loops! Enjoy it! Thanks!
