After serving as a congressman and the governor of Tennessee, Houston decided to make his mark in the newly formed Republic of Texas. He moved to Texas in 1832, embracing the cause of independence from Mexico.
Texas Revolution and Presidency
Sam Houston played a crucial role in the Texas Revolution, which ultimately led to the state's independence from Mexico. He commanded the Texan forces as their general during the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836, successfully defeating General Santa Anna's army and securing victory for Texas.
In recognition of his leadership and dedication to the cause, Houston was elected the first president of the Republic of Texas. He served as the president from 1836 to 1838 and again from 1841 to 1844. During this time, he focused on establishing a stable government, promoting education, and advocating for Texan interests at the national level.
Annexation and United States Senate
In 1845, Houston played a pivotal role in Texas's annexation by the United States. As a firm believer in manifest destiny, he pushed for Texas to become a part of the Union. Once Texas became a state, Houston represented it in the United States Senate from 1846 to 1859.
During his tenure in the Senate, Houston championed the cause of Native American rights, urging the government to protect their territories and respect their sovereignty. He also fervently argued against secession during the buildup to the Civil War, earning him both praise and criticism.
Legacy and Impact
Sam Houston's impact on Texas and the United States cannot be overstated. He played a vital role in the establishment of Texas as an independent republic and its eventual annexation by the United States. As a president and senator, Houston tirelessly fought for the rights and interests of the Texans, leaving a lasting legacy of governance and statesmanship.
Outside of his political career, Houston's personal life was equally intriguing. He married three times and had many children, often displaying a rebellious and fearless spirit.
Andrew Revkin, a well-known environmental journalist and historian, has studied and written extensively about Sam Houston Texas. Revkin's publications shed light on Houston's environmental values and his foresight in recognizing the importance of preserving natural resources for future generations.

With engaging text, extensive quotations, and more than 100 striking photographs, this volume captures the world of the iconic Texas Revolutionary.
When Sam Houston crossed the Red River for the first time in 1832, he termed Texas the “finest portion of the Globe that has ever blessed my vision.” His diplomatic, military, political, and personal activities took him all over what is now the eastern half of the state—and he fell in love with every foot of it. With panoramic vision and broad descriptive power, he expressed his lasting affection for the country in everything he said and wrote.
Having followed the trail of every trip he made in Texas, Sue Flanagan presents the Texas Houston knew—through his picturesque language and her own evocative photographs. The face of Texas east of San Antonio is pictured in all its varied features. With great discernment, Flanagan captures the landscapes, buildings, and objects in the most revealing light and in the best atmospheric conditions.
These spots in nature which Houston saw, these objects which he knew, these houses where he was entertained and where he lived—all are tangible reminders of “this colorful, cagey, and controversial man,” this Texas hero whose life was a tragedy in divided loyalties.
