Imagine a time where steam locomotives ruled the railways, chugging along the tracks with power and majesty. One locomotive in particular stands tall and proud, capturing the hearts of steam enthusiasts and history buffs alike. The Pere Marquette 1225, also known as the "Images Of Rail," is an iconic symbol of the steam era in the United States.

With its distinctive design and rich history, the Pere Marquette 1225 has become a beloved locomotive and a cherished piece of American railroad heritage. In this article, we will take you on a journey through time, exploring the fascinating story of the Pere Marquette 1225 and the stunning images that capture its essence.

The History of the Pere Marquette 1225

The Pere Marquette 1225 was built by the Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio, in 1941. It was one of eight Berkshire-type locomotives produced for the Pere Marquette Railway. With its powerful capabilities and versatile design, the 1225 became the flagship locomotive of the railway.

The locomotive was primarily used for hauling passenger and freight trains over long distances. It operated on the Pere Marquette Railway until the late 1950s when steam locomotives started to be replaced by diesel-electric locomotives. In 1957, the 1225 was officially retired from service.

However, the story of the Pere Marquette 1225 did not end there. In 1958, it was purchased by Michigan State University (MSU) and displayed on campus as a monument to the steam era. MSU even painted the locomotive green and white, the school's colors.

Decades later, a group of dedicated volunteers formed the Steam Railroading Institute (SRI) with the goal of restoring the 1225 to its former glory. After years of hard work and fundraising, the locomotive was successfully restored and returned to full operation in 1988. Since then, it has been used for excursion trips and as a star attraction during rail festivals.

The Magnificent Design of the Pere Marquette 1225

The Pere Marquette 1225 is a true work of art, with its stunning design and intricate details. As a Berkshire-type locomotive, it features a 2-8-4 wheel arrangement, meaning it has two leading wheels, eight powered driving wheels, and four trailing wheels. This configuration gave the locomotive superior pulling power and stability.

Its exterior showcases a beautiful black and red paint scheme, adorned with the Pere Marquette logo and number 1225. The locomotive stands at an impressive height of 15 feet and 2 inches, with a length of 98 feet and 10 inches. With its massive size and imposing presence, the 1225 truly captivates anyone who lays eyes on it.

Stepping inside the cab, you are transported back in time. The control panel, gauges, and levers remind you of the bygone era of steam locomotives. The firebox glows as coal is shoveled into it, creating the steam that powers the locomotive. The sounds of the churning wheels and the whistle's echoing shriek envelop your senses, immersing you in the magic of the steam era.

Images of Rail: Pere Marquette 1225 presents the history of steam locomotive 1225, one of 39 Berkshire Class 2-8-4's built between 1937 and 1944 for the Pere Marquette Railway.

Although it is best known for being the sound and image behind the movie adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg's The Polar Express, 1225 has a rich history that preceded a life as a movie star. From her construction at Lima Locomotive Works and important role in hauling material from factories to the front in World War II to her unlikely preservation on Michigan State University's campus and eventual restoration, the history of 1225 covers nearly 75 years. The locomotive is now housed at the Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso, Michigan, and the story behind it will take readers back to a time when whistles in the night charged the imagination and the United States truly was the "Arsenal of Democracy."
