Every year, Muslims around the world eagerly await the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan. It is a time of spiritual reflection, increased devotion, and self-discipline. Fasting from dawn till dusk is one of the fundamental acts of worship during this month. However, for my father, Ramadan held an even deeper meaning - it was a time to teach us valuable life lessons and prioritize the well-being of his children over his own spiritual practices.

As a child, I looked forward to Ramadan with both excitement and a sense of responsibility. It was a time when our household would transform into a hub of spirituality and togetherness. We would wake up before sunrise for the pre-dawn meal, known as suhoor, and break our fast together as a family at sunset with the evening meal called iftar. The atmosphere was filled with the aroma of delicious food, the sound of heartfelt prayers, and a sense of unity that only Ramadan could bring.

However, my fondest memories of Ramadan are intertwined with my father's incredible acts of sacrifice. Despite being obligated to fast from sunrise to sunset, my father would often break his fast with us, his children, out of love and to strengthen our bond as a family.

There were instances when my siblings and I would be unable to complete our fast due to illness or other genuine reasons. On these occasions, instead of continuing with his own fast, my father would break his too, showing us that family always comes first. I remember feeling a deep sense of gratitude and admiration for his selflessness, as he willingly put aside his religious obligations to take care of us. It was a lesson that went beyond the realms of the holy month; it was a lesson in empathy, love, and sacrifice.

The impact of my father's actions was not lost on us. It taught us the importance of compassion, especially in times when others are in need. My father's dedication to his children's well-being extended beyond food and drink. He made it a point to spend quality time with each of us during Ramadan, either through engaging in intellectual discussions or participating in acts of charity.

Ramadan not only emphasized the significance of self-restraint and spiritual growth in our lives, but it also instilled a deep sense of gratitude within us. Witnessing my father's sacrifices made us appreciate the blessings we had, and in turn, inspired us to give back to the less fortunate. My siblings and I would often join my father in distributing iftar meals to the underprivileged, an experience that left a lasting impression on our young hearts.

Reflecting back on those Ramadan memories now, I am filled with immense gratitude for the lessons my father imparted. He showed us that love, sacrifice, and compassion are at the core of Islam, and that practicing these values is just as important as adhering to the rituals.

As I grew older, I came to understand and appreciate the magnitude of my father's sacrifices even more. His actions during Ramadan not only taught us valuable life lessons but also shaped us into the individuals we are today - individuals who strive to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

My father's commitment to breaking his fast with us, his fasting children, was a true testament to his unwavering love and devotion. It served as a constant reminder of the power of sacrifice and the importance of putting others before oneself.

As we approach another Ramadan, I am reminded of the incredible example set by my father. His selflessness continues to inspire me, and I strive to emulate his values in my own life. Ramadan is not just a month of fasting; it is a month of reflection, growth, and unity. It is a time when we can learn from the sacrifices of our loved ones and carry their legacy forward.

Fasting does not mean that we stop eating and drinking only. There are many negative behaviors that we must avoid in the month of mercy. What did the father of our friend, the heroine of the story, do to reprimand him for what he did? How can young people reprimand adults while they respect them!
