Love and Saint Augustine is a remarkable book written by the influential philosopher Hannah Arendt. In this insightful work, Arendt delves deep into the complex nature of love and its significance in the context of human existence. With her characteristic intellectual rigor, she explores the ideas of love, solitude, and the nature of evil through the lens of the teachings of Saint Augustine.

The Enigma of Love Explored

Love, an enigmatic force that has captivated the human psyche since time immemorial, is a central theme in Arendt's analysis. She investigates the multifaceted nature of love and its various expressions, ranging from romantic love to the love for humanity as a whole. Arendt poses important questions about the influence of love on individual and collective behavior, and digs into the inherent contradictions that love presents.

Arendt's exploration of love also emphasizes the concept of solitude. She argues that love can only flourish in a state of solitude, where individuals can truly confront themselves and develop a sense of self-identity. Arendt highlights the importance of solitude as a prerequisite for authentic relationships and the cultivation of a genuine understanding of love.

Saint Augustine's Teachings as a Guide

In her book, Arendt draws heavily on the works of the influential Christian theologian and philosopher, Saint Augustine. Augustine's profound reflections on love, sin, and the human condition serve as a foundation for Arendt's exploration. She weaves his teachings into her analysis, using them as a guide to understand the complexities of love.

Augustine's concept of caritas, or divine love, is a central aspect of Arendt's examination. She explores the transformative power of caritas and its ability to transcend personal interests, leading to the creation of just and inclusive communities. Arendt believes that this form of love holds the key to overcoming the deep-rooted divisions that characterize modern society.

The Existential Dilemma: Love and Evil

Arendt also investigates the intricate relationship between love and evil. She reflects on the ways in which love, when corrupted or misguided, can lead to acts of violence and destruction. Arendt argues that a distorted understanding of love often fuels the perpetration of evil, bringing chaos and suffering to individuals and societies.

By analyzing various historical and contemporary examples, Arendt explores how love can become intertwined with power and domination, leading to the subjugation and dehumanization of others. Through her thought-provoking analysis, Arendt forces us to confront the darker side of love and the urgent need for a critical examination of its manifestations in our own lives.

The Relevance of Arendt's Thoughts Today

Love and Saint Augustine is a timeless work that continues to hold immense relevance in our contemporary world. Arendt's exploration of love and its complexities serves as an invitation for introspection, challenging us to reflect on our own experiences of love and the implications they hold.

This work also offers valuable insights into the challenges facing our societies today. Arendt's examination of the interplay between love, power, and evil sheds light on the prevalent issues of oppression, discrimination, and violence that continue to plague our global community. By understanding the complexities of love, we can strive for more compassionate, just, and inclusive societies.

The brilliant thinker who taught us about the banality of evil explores another brilliant thinker and his concept of love.

Hannah Arendt, the author of
The Origins of Totalitarianism and The Human Condition, began her scholarly career with an exploration of Saint Augustine’s concept of caritas, or neighborly love, written under the direction of Karl Jaspers and the influence of Martin Heidegger. After her German academic life came to a halt in 1933, Arendt carried her dissertation into exile in France, and years later took the same battered and stained copy to New York.

During the late 1950s and early 1960s, as she was completing or reworking her most influential studies of political life, Arendt was simultaneously annotating and revising her dissertation on Augustine, amplifying its argument with terms and concepts she was using in her political works of the same period. The dissertation became a bridge over which Arendt traveled back and forth between 1929 Heidelberg and 1960s New York, carrying with her Augustine's question about the possibility of social life in an age of rapid political and moral change.

In Love and Saint Augustine, political science professor Joanna Vecchiarelli Scott and philosophy professor Judith Chelius Stark make this important early work accessible for the first time. Here is a completely corrected and revised English translation that incorporates Arendt’s own substantial revisions and provides additional notes based on letters, contracts, and other documents as well as the recollections of Arendt's friends and colleagues during her later years.

“Both the dissertation and the accompanying essay are accessible to informed lay readers. Scott and Stark's s about the cohesive evolution of Arendt’s thought are compelling but leave room for continuing discussion.”—
