Are you interested in deepening your understanding of political philosophy? Look no further! In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the world of Integralism, a significant school of thought to comprehend politics from a different perspective. Join us on this intellectual journey as we explore the principles, history, and impact of Integralism in modern society.

Understanding Integralism: A Brief

Integralism is a philosophical and political movement that emphasizes the integration of religious, cultural, and social aspects into the governing system. Rooted in Catholic teachings, Integralism differs from traditional liberalism or socialism. It promotes the idea that society can best function when guided by principles derived from a comprehensive worldview.

Developed as a response to secularism, individualism, and materialism, Integralism seeks to restore a holistic approach to governance. By reflecting on the unity of faith, culture, and social life, adherents of Integralism believe that society can achieve true fulfillment for all individuals.

The Principles of Integralism

Integralism is built upon a set of principles that guide its political philosophy. These principles include:

  • Social Hierarchy: Integralism recognizes the necessity of social hierarchy, where each individual has a role to play in society according to their capabilities and gifts.
  • Subsidiarity: This principle advocates for decision-making authority to be delegated to the lowest level possible, allowing individuals and communities to have a say in their own affairs.
  • Distributism: Often associated with Integralism, Distributism emphasizes the fair distribution of wealth and property ownership, aiming to avoid extreme inequalities.
  • Common Good: Integralism values the common good above individual interests, aiming to create a society that benefits everyone.

A Historical Perspective

The roots of Integralism can be traced back to the early 20th century. It gained prominence in Catholic intellectual circles, particularly in response to the rise of liberalism and communism. Figures such as Charles Maurras, who developed the concept of "integral nationalism," and French Catholic philosopher Jacques Maritain played substantial roles in shaping Integralism as a distinct political philosophy.

Integralism faced both popularity and controversy in various countries around the world. In Brazil, for instance, the Integralist Action Movement emerged as a significant political force during the 1930s. Despite its brief duration, the movement left a lasting impact on Brazilian politics.

Challenges and Relevance in Modern Society

Integralism presents both challenges and contemporary relevance in today's society. Critics argue that it can be seen as a regressive idea, limiting individual freedoms and disregarding diverse perspectives. However, proponents of Integralism argue that it provides a valuable alternative to the prevailing individualistic and materialistic ideologies.

In an era marked by increasing secularism and the fragmentation of communities, Integralism seeks to build a cohesive society by embracing the spiritual, cultural, and social dimensions of human existence. It encourages individuals to participate actively in shaping their communities and advocating for the common good.

The Integralism Manual of Political Philosophy serves as a valuable resource for those interested in understanding the school of thought. By exploring its principles, historical background, and contemporary relevance, readers will gain a deeper insight into this unique perspective of governance.

Whether you are a student of political philosophy, a curious reader, or a passionate advocate for societal change, this comprehensive guide will broaden your knowledge and help you engage in meaningful discussions about politics and governance.

Embark on this enlightening journey to explore Integralism and its role in shaping the world we live in. Unlock new perspectives and discover how this thought-provoking philosophy can contribute to a better society.

Integralism is the application to the temporal, political order of the full implications of the revelation of man’s supernatural end in Christ and of the divinely established means by which it is to be attained. These implications are identified by means of the philosophia perennis exemplified in the fundamental principles of St Thomas Aquinas. Since the first principle in moral philosophy is the last end, and man’s last end cannot be known except by revelation, it is only by accepting the role of handmaid of theology that political philosophy can be adequately constituted. Integralism: A Manual of Political Philosophy is a handbook for those who seek to understand the consequences of this integration of faith and reason for political, economic and individual civic life. It will also serve as a scholastic to political philosophy for those new to the subject. Each chapter finishes with a list of the principal theses proposed.
