A Glimpse into History

The origins of fire lookout towers in Oregon can be traced back to the late 19th century. As settlers began to explore and settle in these wildlands, the need for fire protection and detection became apparent. In response, the United States Forest Service began constructing fire lookout towers across the state.

Over the next few decades, fire lookouts became a common sight in Oregon's wilderness. These structures, often made of wood or steel, featured small cabins atop tall wooden towers. Equipped with binoculars, fire finders, radios, and other essential tools, the lookout personnel diligently scanned the horizon for any signs of smoke or fire.

As technology advanced, so did the fire lookout system. The of aircraft patrols and aerial fire suppression techniques in the mid-20th century gradually reduced the need for these remote towers. However, many of these historic structures have been preserved and continue to serve as reminders of Oregon's firefighting legacy.

Exploring Fire Lookouts Today

Today, fire lookout towers in Oregon are cherished relics of the past, offering visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the life of a lookout personnel. While some fire towers have been converted into rental cabins or visitor centers, others remain as picturesque ruins, blending seamlessly into the natural landscape.

One of the most iconic fire lookouts in Oregon is the Mount Hood Lookout. Perched atop the majestic Mount Hood, this historic tower offers panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness. Visitors can hike up to the lookout and imagine themselves standing guard against the ever-present threat of wildfires.

The first lookouts were rustic camps on mountaintops, where men and women were stationed to keep an eye out for wildfires. As the importance of fire prevention grew, a lookout construction boom resulted in hundreds of cabins and towers being built on Oregon's high points. When aircraft and cameras became more cost-effective and efficient methods of fire detection, many old lookouts were abandoned or removed. Of the many hundreds of lookouts built in Oregon over the past 100 years, less than 175 remain, and only about half of these are still manned. However, some lookouts are being repurposed as rental cabins, and volunteers are constantly working to save endangered lookouts. This book tells the story of Oregon's fire lookouts, from their heyday to their decline, and of the effort to save the ones that are left.
