The world of television has been graced with numerous iconic shows that have left an indelible mark on viewers. And behind some of these masterpieces stands a legendary director who has played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of television history. With a career spanning five decades, this director has not only brought us unforgettable characters and stories but has also revolutionized the way we perceive television entertainment.

Taxi: An Unforgettable Journey

It all started in the late 1970s when the director embarked on a groundbreaking series called Taxi. This comedy-drama took us on a wild ride through the lives of colorful New York City taxi drivers, creating a perfect blend of humor and heartwarming moments. With its ensemble cast and sharp writing, Taxi quickly became a fan favorite, earning critical acclaim and a loyal following. And behind the camera, the visionary director ensured that each episode was a masterpiece, captivating audiences with their storytelling prowess.

One of the most memorable characters from Taxi was the eccentric Reverend Jim Ignatowski, portrayed by the brilliant Christopher Lloyd. Cheers: The Beloved Bar Where Everybody Knows Your Name

In the 1980s, the director continued his streak of success with another iconic show, Cheers. Set in a cozy Boston bar, this sitcom introduced us to a colorful cast of characters who made us feel like part of the gang. Thanks to the director's guidance, Cheers became much more than just a place where "everybody knows your name" – it became a home for viewers, a place of comfort and laughter. The show went on to win multiple awards and was an instant classic.

One of the most memorable moments from Cheers was the on-again, off-again romance between Sam Malone (played by Ted Danson) and Diane Chambers (played by Shelley Long). The director's expert storytelling skills allowed this relationship to evolve naturally, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. It was through the director's visionary approach that Cheers became more than just a comedy – it became a story about love, friendship, and the human condition.

Frasier: A Spin-Off That Soared to New Heights

After the success of Taxi and Cheers, the director continued his journey in the 1990s with the critically acclaimed spin-off, Frasier. Following the life of psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane (played by Kelsey Grammer), this sitcom took us into the refined world of Seattle, full of witty banter and sophisticated humor. Frasier became an instant hit and earned a dedicated fanbase, thanks in no small part to the director's meticulous attention to detail.

The director's ability to capture the essence of each character was evident in Frasier, and none more so than in the lovable father, Martin Crane (played by John Mahoney). Through the director's guidance, Martin's relatable quirks and endearing nature shone through, creating a character that viewers couldn't help but root for. The director's skillful storytelling weaved complex narratives into the fabric of each episode, creating a show that left a lasting impact on television history.

A Legacy That Continues to Inspire

The director behind Taxi, Cheers, and Frasier has left a significant legacy in the world of television. Throughout five decades, they have touched the lives of millions, bringing laughter, tears, and unforgettable characters into our living rooms. Their dedication, vision, and storytelling prowess have set the bar high for future generations of directors, inspiring them to push the boundaries of what television can achieve.

As we look back on the five decades of stories from this legendary director, we can't help but feel grateful for the indelible mark they have left on television history. From the streets of New York City to the cozy bar in Boston and the refined world of Seattle, this director has transported us to places we'll never forget. Their ability to captivate audiences with their storytelling genius is a testament to their unparalleled talent and passion for their craft.

So, let's raise a glass to the legendary director behind Taxi, Cheers, and Frasier – a true pioneer in the world of television and a guiding light for storytellers everywhere.

“Being directed by the Jimmy Burrows, while on Friends, was like hitting the jackpot. I’m delighted that everyone can now share in his incredible insight with this book.”—JENNIFER ANISTON

From the director of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, Cheers, Frasier, Friends, and Will &Grace comes an insightful and nostalgic memoir that offers a bounty of behind-the-scenes moments from our favorite shows, peeling away the layers behind how a successful sitcom comes together—and stays that way.

Legendary sitcom director James Burrows has spent five decades making America laugh. Here readers will find never-revealed stories behind the casting of the dozens of great sitcoms he directed, as well as details as to how these memorable shows were created, how they got on the air, and how the cast and crew continued to develop and grow. Burrows also examines his own challenges, career victories, and defeats, and provides advice for aspiring directors, writers, and actors. All this from the man who helped launch the careers of Ted Danson, Kelsey Grammer, Woody Harrelson, Jennifer Aniston, Debra Messing, and Melissa McCarthy, to name a few.

Burrows talks fondly about the inspiration he found during his childhood and young adult years, including his father, legendary playwright and Broadway director Abe Burrows. From there he goes on to explain his rigorous work ethic, forged in his early years in theater, where he did everything from stage managing to building sets to, finally, directing. Transitioning to television, Burrows locked into a coveted job with The Mary Tyler Moore Show, where he first observed and then started to apply his craft. Directing most of the episodes of Taxi came next, where he worked closely with writers/producers Glen and Les Charles. The three formed a remarkable creative partnership that helped Burrows achieve his much sought-after goal of ownership and agency over a project, which came with the creating and directing of the seminal and beloved hit Cheers. Burrows has directed more than seventy-five pilots that have gone to series and over a thousand episodes, more than any other director in history.

Directed by James Burrows is a heart-and-soul master class in sitcom, revealing what it truly takes to get a laugh.
