Europe, with its diverse cultures and languages, has witnessed the growth of numerous collective actions that have brought about significant societal changes. These actions have played a crucial role in empowering individuals and fostering unity among different communities. From workers' unions to grassroots movements, Europe has embraced collective actions as a means to address socio-economic and political issues. This article explores some of the most impactful collective actions in Europe and delves into their significance in shaping the continent's history.

The Women's Suffrage Movement
The fight for women's suffrage spread across Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Women, unified by their shared goal of achieving equality and political representation, mobilized through various means ranging from peaceful protests to civil disobedience campaigns. Their collective actions eventually led to the acknowledgment of women's rights and paved the way for a more equal society.
The French Revolution
The French Revolution of 1789 was a turning point in European history and a glaring example of a collective action trajectory. The revolution aimed to dismantle the monarchy, establish a republic, and fight against social inequalities. During this period, the French people organized protests, uprisings, and demonstrations to demand their rights. This collective action resulted in the downfall of the monarchy, expedited the spread of revolutionary ideals across Europe, and shaped political systems that still exist today.
The Solidarity Movement in Poland
The Solidarity movement emerged in the early 1980s as a response to oppressive communist rule in Poland. Led by Lech Walesa and supported by workers and intellectuals, it became one of the most influential labor movements in European history. The movement united individuals from various backgrounds and professions, advocating for workers' rights, civil liberties, and democratic reforms. Through strikes, sit-ins, and organized protests, Solidarity challenged the communist regime, ultimately leading to political and social transformations in Poland.
Nelson Mandela and the Anti-Apartheid Movement
Although not native to Europe, the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa had a profound impact on the collective actions in Europe. Nelson Mandela, an iconic figure of the movement, became an inspiration for Europeans fighting against injustice and discrimination. Apartheid became a symbol of racial segregation worldwide, and collective actions in Europe aligned themselves with the struggle against this oppressive regime. These actions contributed to the isolation of apartheid South Africa and ultimately played a role in its downfall.
Environmental Activism Across Europe
In recent years, environmental activism has gained significant momentum across Europe. Groups like Extinction Rebellion and Fridays for Future have organized protests demanding urgent action against climate change and environmental degradation. Their collective actions have heightened public awareness, influenced policy-making processes, and put environmental concerns at the forefront of political agendas.
Collective actions in Europe have proven time and again to be influential agents of change, promoting unity and empowering individuals to address social, political, and environmental issues. From suffrage movements to labor uprisings, these collective actions have shaped Europe's history and laid the foundation for more equitable societies. As we move forward, it is crucial to recognize the power of unity and continue supporting and participating in collective actions that strive for a better future.

This open access book offers an analytical presentation of how Europe has created its own version of collective actions. In the last three decades, Europe has seen a remarkable proliferation of collective action legislation, making class actions the most successful export product of the American legal scholarship. While its spread has been surrounded by distrust and suspiciousness, today more than half of the EU Member States have introduced collective actions for damages and from those who did, more than half chose, to some extent, the opt-out system. This book demonstrates why collective actions have been felt needed from the perspective of access to justice and effectiveness of law, the European debate and the deep layers of the European reaction and resistance, revealing how the Copernican turn of class actions questions the fundamentals of the European thinking about market and public interest. Using a transsystemic presentation of the European national models, it analyzes the way collective actions were accommodated with the European regulatory environment, the novel and peculiar regulatory questions they had to address and how and why they work differently on this side of the Atlantic.
