AN ART INDUSTRY OF THE BAYOUS; THE POTTERY OF NEWCOMB COLLEGE, TULANE UNIVERSITY, NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, first published in 1904. Excerpt: "When studying the potter's art in the United States, we find that no region of our country can claim exclusive right to either the art idea or the technical skill which produces the beautiful vessel of clay.
The conditions of art, science and industry now prevailing among us, appear to have set in action Longfellow's poem of Keramos. The enterprise originated in the art school of the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College, at New Orleans, which is itself a department of the Tulane University of Louisiana. The school, founded in 1887, first directed its efforts to educate teachers of the fine arts and to become a center of aesthetic culture.
