In this context, holistic refers to the understanding that each of us is more than the sum of our parts. We learn in nursing school about the medical aspects of care, but sometimes other factors that impact care like psychosocial needs, cultural considerations, and the many social determinants of health are not emphasized. These factors are crucial if we are to provide compassionate care that is centered on the needs and priorities of the patient, and that look critically and realistically at the patient’s reality and their world view.
