Lucy’s story began with uncertainty, a tale of a little girl lost in a world that was foreign to her. But through love, determination, and the power of adoption, her life transformed into a beautiful symphony that continues to inspire and uplift those around her.

It was a sunny day in late summer when I received a phone call that would change my life forever. The adoption agency notified me that they had found a match for my desire to become a parent. A three-year-old girl named Lucy, who had been abandoned at birth, was in desperate need of a loving home.

As I entered the room where Lucy was waiting, my heart skipped a beat. There she was, a tiny bundle of joy with bright eyes, full of curiosity, and an infectious smile. I knew in that moment that she was meant to be my daughter.

Lucy’s Journey Begins

Lucy's transition into our family wasn't easy. Like any child who has experienced early trauma and abandonment, she had her struggles. From the very beginning, she had difficulties trusting new faces and forming emotional connections. It broke my heart to see the fear and insecurity in her eyes.

But I was determined to give her the love and stability she deserved. We started therapy sessions and joined support groups for adoptive families. Slowly but surely, Lucy began to open up and trust those around her. Therapy became a safe place for her to express her feelings and fears.

Over time, her remarkable resilience and spirit shone through. Lucy's love for life was contagious, and she had an incredible ability to find joy in the simplest things. We painted, danced, and sang together, creating memories that will forever be etched in my heart.

The Power of Unconditional Love

Throughout Lucy's journey, one thing remained constant – love. Unconditional love became the cornerstone of our relationship. It guided us through the challenges and provided strength during the tough times. Lucy started to understand that no matter what, she had a safe and secure place in our family.

As she grew older, Lucy faced moments of self-doubt and questions about her identity. We celebrated her heritage, explaining the beauty of her diverse background. We embraced her individuality and helped her find her voice, encouraging her to express herself authentically.

In addition to love, education played a vital role in Lucy's growth. We ensured she had access to quality education that nurtured her talents and interests. With time, her confidence soared, and she started to excel academically and socially.

Love Knows No Boundaries

Our journey was not without its challenges. We faced prejudice and stereotypes along the way. Some people struggled to understand our non-traditional family and would ask invasive questions. But we never let those opinions define us or undermine our love.

We surrounded ourselves with a community of accepting and inclusive individuals who celebrated our unique family dynamic. These incredible people became Lucy's second family and provided her with additional role models and a sense of belonging.

Lucy's journey of self-discovery also led us to reconnect with her biological family. We met her birth parents, and through open conversations, we all gained a deeper understanding of Lucy's history and the circumstances that led to her adoption. It was a healing and transformative experience for all involved.

A Bright Future Ahead

Today, Lucy is a young woman filled with dreams and aspirations. She is an advocate for adoption, spreading awareness and helping other children find their forever homes. Her journey of resilience, love, and self-discovery has inspired me immensely.

As I reflect on our incredible journey together, I am reminded of the profound impact adoption can have on a child's life. It is a testament to the power of love and the incredible strength children possess when given the opportunity to thrive.

Lucy's story is a story of triumph over adversity, of love guiding us through the darkest of times. It is a story that reminds us all of the power of family, whether biological or chosen, to shape and uplift our lives.

So, if you are considering adoption or know someone in a similar situation, I encourage you to open your hearts and minds. Embrace the journey, for it may lead to a love that is beyond measure – a love that can change lives, just like Lucy's story changed mine.

This is PART 2 of 3 (Chapters 10-16 of 27).

You can read Part 2 one week ahead of release of the full-length eBook and paperback.

The eleventh memoir and latest title from the internationally bestselling author and foster carer Cathy Glass. This book tells the true story of Cathy’s adopted daughter Lucy.

Lucy was born to a single mother who had been abused and neglected for most of her own childhood. Right from the beginning Lucy’s mother couldn’t cope, but it wasn’t until Lucy reached eight years old that she was finally taken into permanent foster care.

By the time Lucy is brought to live with Cathy she is eleven years old and severely distressed after being moved from one foster home to another. Withdrawn, refusing to eat and three years behind in her schooling, it is thought that the damage Lucy has suffered is irreversible.

But Cathy and her two children bond with Lucy quickly, and break through to Lucy in a way no-one else has been able to, finally showing her the loving home she never believed existed. Cathy and Lucy believe they were always destined to be mother and daughter – it just took them a little while to find each other.
