"We Are Not Here To Be Bystanders": Taking a Stand for Justice and Equality
![Jese Leos](https://bookishfables.com/author/wade-cox.jpg)
The Power of Activism
When it comes to promoting positive change and breaking the chains of inequality, it is crucial that we understand one fundamental truth: we are not here to be bystanders. Each and every one of us has the power and responsibility to stand up against injustice, discrimination, and prejudice in our society. We must actively engage, educate ourselves, and take action to create a world that is fair, inclusive, and equal for all.
Why Being a Bystander is Not an Option
Bystanders are individuals who witness acts of injustice but choose to remain passive, not intervening or speaking out against what they see. Being a bystander is essentially choosing to maintain the status quo, perpetuating systems of inequality and oppression. In order to break these cycles, we must reject passivity and embrace our responsibility to advocate for change.

The famous quote by civil rights activist Elie Wiesel perfectly encapsulates why being a bystander is not an option: "We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented."
The Consequences of Inaction
When we choose to be bystanders, we inadvertently contribute to the continuation of systemic discrimination and inequality. Our inaction allows oppressive structures to thrive, and marginalized communities continue to suffer. Remaining silent enables injustice to persist, and the voices of the marginalized are further silenced.
It is important to recognize that inaction is also a form of privilege. Those who are not directly impacted by discrimination have the privilege to choose whether or not to engage in advocating for change. It is our duty to leverage this privilege and use our voices to amplify the calls for justice from those whose voices have been silenced for far too long.
How to Engage and Take Action
Engaging and taking action can take various forms depending on our individual circumstances, resources, and abilities. Here are some ways we can actively participate in promoting justice and equality:
- Educate yourself: Knowledge is power. Take the time to educate yourself about the various forms of injustice and discrimination faced by marginalized communities. Read books, articles, and reports, watch documentaries, and listen to the stories of those affected. Understanding the history and context is the first step towards effecting change.
- Speak out: Use your voice to raise awareness and start conversations about social justice issues. Whether it is with family, friends, colleagues, or on social media platforms, don't shy away from discussing uncomfortable topics. Advocacy begins with actively challenging misconceptions and advocating for equal rights.
- Support organizations and initiatives: Contribute to organizations actively working towards dismantling systemic discrimination. This can be through donations, volunteering, or simply amplifying their messages on various platforms. Collaborating with like-minded individuals and organizations can make a significant impact.
- Attend protests and rallies: Join peaceful protests and rallies to demand justice and equality. Being physically present can showcase solidarity and provide a platform for collective voices to be heard.
- Vote responsibly: Participate in local and national elections and choose candidates who champion equality, inclusivity, and social justice. Utilize your voting power to endorse politicians who advocate for the fundamental rights of all individuals.
- Support businesses with ethical practices: Choose to support businesses that prioritize diversity, inclusion, and fair labor practices. By making conscious consumer choices, we can contribute to creating a more just economic landscape.
The Time for Change is Now
We cannot afford to remain passive in the face of injustice any longer. Our collective action and unwavering commitment to fighting inequality are essential for societal progress. Remember, we are not here to be bystanders; we are here to make a difference, advocate for equality, and create a world where justice prevails.
Let us embark on this journey together, embracing our role as active participants in shaping a brighter, more equal future for all.

Linda Sarsour, co-organizer of the Women’s March, shares an “unforgettable memoir” (Booklist) about how growing up Palestinian Muslim American, feminist, and empowered moved her to become a globally recognized activist on behalf of marginalized communities across the country.
On a chilly spring morning in Brooklyn, nineteen-year-old Linda Sarsour stared at her reflection, dressed in a hijab for the first time. She saw in the mirror the woman she was growing to be—a young Muslim American woman unapologetic in her faith and her activism, who would discover her innate sense of justice in the aftermath of 9/11. Now heralded for her award-winning leadership of the Women’s March on Washington, Sarsour offers a “moving memoir [that] is a testament to the power of love in action” (Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow).
From the Brooklyn bodega her father owned, where Linda learned the real meaning of intersectionality, to protests in the streets of Washington, DC, Linda’s experience as a daughter of Palestinian immigrants is a moving portrayal of what it means to find one’s voice and use it for the good of others. We follow Linda as she learns the tenets of successful community organizing, and through decades of fighting for racial, economic, gender, and social justice, as she becomes one of the most recognized activists in the nation. We also see her honoring her grandmother’s dying wish, protecting her children, building resilient friendships, and mentoring others even as she loses her first mentor in a tragic accident. Throughout, she inspires you to take action as she reaffirms that we are not here to be bystanders.
In this “book that speaks to our times” (The Washington Post), Harry Belafonte writes of Linda in the foreword, “While we may not have made it to the Promised Land, my peers and I, my brothers and sisters in liberation can rest easy that the future is in the hands of leaders like Linda Sarsour. I have often said to Linda that she embodies the principle and purpose of another great Muslim leader, brother Malcolm X.”
This is her story.
