Schreiber's deepest insecurities and darkest fantasies. In every one of these manic flashes, the same characters appear: Georgie, the alter-ego living in Ben's body, and Claudia, the object of his twisted desires and destructive obsession. These "schizophrenic blue-movie skits and sleazy hardcore porn-flicks," as Ben describes them to his psychiatrist, open a disturbing window into the psychopathy that controls his every day. Claudia is a woman Georgie meets on the street. They have crude sex in a motel. Georgie and Claudia are long married and living together in a sprawling LA mansion. They abuse one another, and she has an affair with the gardener. A business trip ends early, bringing Georgie home in time to find Claudia hiding another man in their bedroom. Georgie flies into a homicidal rage, but he is still a slave to her will. Claudia, a new and dangerously seductive acquaintance, lures Georgie into her home. Fangs extend from her gums and blood drips from her lips, and Georgie can't escape. Georgie and Claudia are a criminal duo; they've robbed a bank and sit with their takings in a duffel bag at a coffee house. In a moment of moral crisis, they leave the money in a Salvation Army box. Claudia is an exotic older woman just arrived from France; she falls into a sultry affair with Georgie, an all-American rogue and criminal. Claudia is struck by a car and paralyzed. In his attempt to keep their love alive, Georgie takes her on a boat ride for her birthday. She drowns. Georgie is married to a woman named Clio, but his mind is tormented by Claudia. He erects a wax museum dedicated to her image while stalking a waitress who bears Claudia's likeness. Just as the line between reality and psychosis is never defined in Benjamin's mind, so it remains muddy on the pages of The Oxygen Tank. In the end, Dr. C., the psychiatrist Ben believes is just as crazy as he, lends his wisdom: Ben seeks to destroy Claudia time and time again because he has created an impossible fantasy, and Claudia, tragically, only wants to be loved.
