A new book dedicated to the Last Supper? A new Da Vinci Code? For heaven's sake... After a flood of fanciful, misleading, anachronistic but certainly intriguing theories, perhaps it would be useful to go back to the Last Supper and assess the situation from the historical, artistic and musical point of view.

In particular, this latter musical aspect has stimulated some at least imaginative and bizarre interpretations at the beginning of the new millennium, such as those expressed by Giovanni Maria Pala, in the essay La musica celata, published in 2007 and recently taken up by Maria Gabriella Fornero, La musica nascosta di Leonardo da Vinci, in 2017.

However, starting from what we know about the theory, practice and aesthetics of music in the Renaissance, the era in which Leonardo da Vinci lived, we can realise that most of these and other hypotheses and reconstructions, although they have had considerable echo, are castles made of sand. However much Leonardo might have been a futuristic genius who was ahead of his time and anticipated mechanical and scientific projects, he could not, in the light of the data available to us, have included a melody as complex and particularly disharmonious as the one reconstructed in the essays cited above.
