Once upon a time, in a small, picturesque village, lived a young girl named Emily. She was just a shy and timid soul, barely twelve years old, with an innocent face and curious eyes that always emitted a sense of longing.

This village, hidden away in the countryside, was known for its close-knit community and peaceful atmosphere. Life there was simple, with everyone living harmoniously, their days filled with laughter and joy. But little did they know, a heart-wrenching tale was about to unfold.

Emily had always lived a sheltered life, protected and loved unconditionally by her parents. She had never known fear, until that fateful day when her family went on a camping trip deep into the forest, far away from the village.

As night fell, a sudden storm exploded overhead, forcing the family to seek refuge inside their tent. Thunder roared and lightning cracked, engulfing the surrounding woods in an eerie, otherworldly glow.

While her parents were preoccupied with securing the tent against the increasing wind, Emily spotted a shadowy figure lurking just beyond the trees. Fear tingled through her veins as she realized that they were not alone, and this mysterious presence was clearly not friendly.

Unable to contain her terror, Emily let out a blood-curdling scream, causing her parents to abandon their task and rush to her side. But by the time they arrived, the shadowy figure had vanished into thin air, leaving no trace behind.

From that moment on, something changed inside Emily. She felt a sense of unease constantly lingering in the shadows, unable to escape the haunting memory of that stormy night in the forest. Nightmares plagued her every sleep, and a deep-rooted desire to return home began to consume her.

Desperate and frightened, Emily sought comfort in the village elder, an aged woman rumored to possess mystical powers and a profound understanding of the unknown. Emily poured her heart out, recounting the tale of that night and the dark figure that haunted her dreams.

The village elder listened attentively, her eyes filled with compassion and wisdom. With a gentle smile, she spoke words that would forever change the course of Emily's life:

"Child, what you encountered that night was no ordinary being. It is said to be a restless spirit, bound to this realm due to unfinished business. But fear not, for there is a way to appease its troubled soul and find solace."

Emily's heart raced with anticipation as the village elder revealed the ritual that could help the young girl free herself from the clutches of this vengeful spirit. She had to embark on a journey to the heart of the forest, seeking a long-lost relic rumored to have the power to release trapped souls.

Touched by the elder's guidance, Emily set forth on her quest, fueled by determination and the hope of returning to the peaceful life she once knew. Along the way, she encountered various challenges, testing her courage and resolve.

Through dense thickets, dark caverns, and treacherous terrain, Emily persisted, the memory of her loving family and the warmth of her village leading her onward. She faced her fears head-on, summoning strength she never knew she had.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Emily stumbled upon an ancient temple hidden away in the heart of the forest. Inside, she found the relic she had been searching for, a glowing orb pulsating with an ethereal energy.

With trembling hands, Emily held the relic aloft, reciting an incantation taught to her by the village elder. As the words left her lips, the orb emitted a blinding light, enveloping her in its warm embrace.

When the light faded and Emily opened her eyes, she found herself back in her village, surrounded by familiar faces and the loving embrace of her parents. Tears of joy streamed down her face as she realized she had made it home, her heart at peace once more.

News of Emily's incredible journey spread throughout the village, igniting a spark of hope in the hearts of all who heard it. Her tale became a legendary reminder of the power of courage, determination, and the strength of the human spirit.

The frightened young girl had transformed into a symbol of resilience, inspiring others to confront their fears and face the unknown head-on. From that day forward, the village thrived, filled with newfound bravery and an unwavering sense of belonging.

And Emily? She grew into a strong and fearless woman, forever grateful for the lessons learned during her extraordinary adventure. She lived her life to the fullest, cherishing every moment and never forgetting the true meaning of home.

So the next time you find yourself yearning for something familiar, take a page out of Emily's book and embark on your own journey. Who knows? You might discover a strength within yourself that you never knew existed and find your way back home.

Cathy Glass, the no.1 bestselling author of Damaged, tells the story of the Alice, a young and vulnerable girl who is desperate to return home to her mother.

Alice, aged four, is snatched by her mother the day she is due to arrive at Cathy's house. Drug-dependent and mentally ill, but desperate to keep hold of her daughter, Alice's mother snatches her from her parents' house and disappears.

Cathy spends three anxious days worrying about her whereabouts before Alice is found safe, but traumatised. Alice is like a little doll, so young and vulnerable, and she immediately finds her place in the heart of Cathy's family. She talks openly about her mummy, who she dearly loves, and how happy she was living with her maternal grandparents before she was put into care. Alice has clearly been very well looked after and Cathy can't understand why she couldn't stay with her grandparents.

It emerges that Alice's grandparents are considered too old (they are in their early sixties) and that the plan is that Alice will stay with Cathy for a month before moving to live with her father and his new wife. The grandparents are distraught – Alice has never known her father, and her grandparents claim he is a violent drug dealer.

Desperate to help Alice find the happy home she deserves, Cathy's parenting skills are tested in many new ways. Finally questions are asked about Alice's father suitability, and his true colours begin to emerge.
