Abraham Lincoln is most famously known for his role as the 16th President of the United States and for leading the nation through one of its most challenging times, the American Civil War. However, behind the scenes, Lincoln’s personal life was filled with incredible love, joy, and heartbreak. The story of his four sons, Robert, Eddy, Willie, and Tad, is an untold tale that unveils the complexity of the man behind the Great Emancipator.
Robert Todd Lincoln was the eldest son of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, born in 1843. Unlike his father, who was known for his rugged looks, Robert had a more refined appearance. He possessed his father’s intellectual curiosity and pursued a career in law. Robert witnessed some of the darkest days in American history, outliving both of his parents and witnessing the assassination of two U.S. Presidents, James A. Garfield and William McKinley. Despite the hardships he faced, Robert played a significant role in preserving his father's legacy and created lasting contributions to American society.
Eddy Lincoln, born in 1846, was the second son of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln. Sadly, Eddy's life was tragically short. He died at the tender age of four due to an unknown illness. His death shattered the Lincoln family, leaving a lasting impact on both Lincoln and his wife. The loss of their son marked the beginning of years plagued by grief.

Willie Lincoln, born in 1850, was beloved by his parents and remained a source of joy and light throughout his short life. As a youngster, he was full of charisma, endearing himself to all who knew him. Unfortunately, Willie's life was also cut short when he succumbed to a severe illness at the age of eleven. His sudden death further deepened the pain that Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln experienced as parents.
Tad Lincoln, the youngest of the Lincoln brothers, was born in 1853. Tad, short for Thomas, possessed a vibrant personality and an infectious zest for life. Despite facing health challenges as a child, Tad captivated everyone with his mischievous antics and genuine warmth. His father often referred to Tad as a "sweet, kind boy" and cherished their bond. However, Tad's life was tragically cut short due to tuberculosis in 1871, just six years after his father's assassination.
Abraham Lincoln, already grappling with the immense pressures of leading a divided nation during a time of war, endured immense personal loss throughout his life. The untimely deaths of Eddy, Willie, and Tad haunted him and his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. Despite the loss, Abraham Lincoln's love and devotion to his children never wavered. He once remarked, "I can't bear to think of a time when my children will not have me to lean on." His role as a devoted father was a source of strength for him, providing solace amidst the turbulent times.
The story of Abraham Lincoln and his boys Robert, Eddy, Willie, and Tad is a reminder that even the most revered historical figures have personal lives filled with triumphs and tragedies. Their untold story sheds light on the humanity of a man who helped shape the course of American history. Lincoln's unwavering dedication to his family is a testament to his character and the depth of his love.
As we remember Abraham Lincoln today, let us not only commemorate his political achievements but also reflect on the unconditional love and resilience he displayed as a father. The untold story of Abraham Lincoln and his boys Robert, Eddy, Willie, and Tad serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of our nation's leaders and the profound impact they have on those closest to them.

President Abraham Lincoln is known as the Great Emancipator, the Savior of the Union, and an American martyr to the people who read about him. But that was not how his sons knew him. Presidential historian Alan Manning invites readers to see not the thoughtful, burdened president delivering the Gettysburg Address to a war-torn nation, but a man quietly reading bedtime stories to his sleepy-eyed sons; and not the resolute commander-in-chief seeking out winning generals and forming war policy, but a man wrestling with his own grown son’s desire to join the army and go off to war. A combination of history, biography, and family culture, this book follows Lincoln from his growing law practice in Springfield through the turbulent war years in the White House, highlighting the same challenges that many fathers face today: balancing a successful career with paternal responsibilities—a perspective largely ignored by previous Lincoln biographers, thus helping to complete the portrait of one of the most popular, significant, and complex figures in American history.
