Nursing memoirs of Grayce Roessler, R.N., Ph.D., one of the earliest members of the Transcultural Nursing Society and an editor of the Society’s Journal. She visited more than 100 countries, including leading Nurses Study Tours; includes lively anecdotes told of the tours by Grayce and her colleagues. She coordinated the Continuing Education programs for health personnel at Golden West College, California. After she and other American Nurses Association members were invited to Communist China in 1985, Grayce invited 20 members of the Chinese Nursing Association to study at Golden West for a year. At the time, very few Chinese were allowed to leave China. Grayce had the audacity to write a personal letter to Chairman Deng Xiaoping in late 1985, asking him to intervene. The letter was successful, and 20 nurses arrived in California to stay with host families and attend Golden West. One can only imagine the astonishment of those young women when experiencing American culture after years of no contact with the West. Grayce visited China 40 times for study tours and lecturing at hospitals in China.

Among landmarks of her study tours and explorations were visiting a small museum in Istanbul, Turkey, dedicated to her idol, Florence Nightingale, and a trip in the American Southwest by camel caravan to re-enact a historical event. Grayce was a firm and outspoken champion of nurses and their relationships to hospital management. She sympathized with women juggling a career and home life, since she had a loving husband and four lively daughters. This short book of 40,137 words is written for a lay reader, as well as for nurses, and — written in a casual and sometimes humorous vein — is a good read for all.
